Meet Yasmine!

I am an attorney, equity advocate, and Culver City mom who is passionate about improving the quality of life for everyone who lives, works, and plays in our beloved city. During the day, I’m employed as the Director of Education Equity at Children’s Defense Fund- CA.

I was elected to the Culver City Council in November 2020. Prior to my election, I served as Vice Chair of the Culver City General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC), where I actively listened to and engaged with our community to infuse equity into our city’s DNA.

My vision is for Culver City to become a model of responsive government that genuinely strives to meet the needs of everyone in our city.

I am ready to help transform Culver City into a truly inclusive city. I understand the consequences of systemic racism on Black, Indigenous, and people of color. As a strong leader and problem-solver, I am committed to working together with the community to reimagine public safety and community well-being in Culver City.

As your elected official, I work hard to ensure that we prioritize equity as Culver City develops, allowing everyone to share in our progress. I believe in Culver City, the community I fell in love with and proudly call home, and would be honored to have your support.

+ Learn more about Yasmine

My daughter and I moved here from New Jersey in 2016, and I immediately appreciated the small-town charm that Culver City offers, along with its bustling downtown, and easy access to greater L.A. via the Expo Line. Before Covid-19, I enjoyed going on bike rides with my daughter, taking the Metro to and from work, and accessing everything I need in town. All the parks, the well-known school district, and the many community groups and events also make Culver City a wonderful place to live and raise my daughter.

I am the daughter of an immigrant father, who like so many parents, worked hard so I could fulfill my dreams. My late father came to the U.S. from Jamaica, and became a Detective for the Newark Police Department. Growing up with his example of service, responsibility, and values has made me particularly alarmed by the rhetoric I hear that demonizes our immigrant communities, and especially proud that Culver City is a Sanctuary City.

My mother and godmother taught me how to advocate for myself and others. As a mother, I am concerned about global climate change and the world we are leaving our children, and generations to come. I have a 12-year old daughter who deserves safe streets on which to bike and skateboard, clean water to drink, clear air to breathe, and the opportunity to reach her full potential. I want these things for all our children, regardless of the neighborhood they live in, or their families’ income.

I am motivated to run for City Council in part because I want to address the city's housing shortage. I was a renter in the city until June of 2020. I know what it’s like to be priced out of Culver City's housing market. The displacement of our neighbors and friends, and especially school children, is harming not only those who are priced out, but the very fabric of our city, as we lose the contributions of many wonderful residents. I also want those who've made their homes here for years to feel that there's a valued place for them and their families in Culver City as we welcome new residents and businesses into our community.
