Priorities

Addressing Culver’s Unhoused Crisis and Helping our most vulnerable

As a member of LAHSA leadership, Yasmine believes in data; and the data shows that most Americans are a paycheck or an emergency away from housing insecurity. A lot of the work from our elected officials around homelessness starts with keeping neighbors in their homes with renter and tenant protections. Yasmine is committed to prioritizing a wrap-around approach to addressing this crisis that provides and ensures stable housing, support services, and job opportunities as steps in helping individuals rebuild their lives.

During her next term, Yasmine will prioritize:

Comprehensive Support Services: Expand access to mental health services including our Mobile Crisis Unit, addiction treatment, and job training programs

Affordable Housing Initiatives: Increasing funding for affordable housing projects and implementing rent control and tenant protection measures to ensure long-term affordability.

Public and Private Partnerships: Collaborating with local nonprofits, faith-based organizations, and others to provide emergency shelters, transitional housing, and other necessary needs.

Revitalizing Culver’s Small Businesses and protecting workers

From restaurants to law offices, small businesses are the lifeblood of Culver City. Yasmine believes we must continue to work alongside our small business and corporate neighbor community to promote new and existing businesses, attracting potential new businesses, creating attractive worker-incentive programs to bring in new talent, expanding worker protections, and finding common sense policy approaches to providing relief for those businesses who need it.

During her next term, Yasmine will prioritize:

Building business development programs and financial support
: Working with the business community and business leaders to create business development programs, including training and mentorship, and providing grants and low-interest loans to small businesses still recovering from the economic impact of the pandemic and rising inflation to help small businesses thrive.

Implementing local procurement policies: Implementing local procurement policies to ensure city contracts support local small businesses.

Revitalize Commercial Areas
: Investing in the revitalization of Downtown Culver, working with businesses and surrounding studios, to attract customers and workers, ultimately boosting local commerce, including  developing programming like Culver City Restaurant Week, and expanding transit routes to encourage patronage of our Culver City businesses

Protecting Workers:
Implementing worker protection policies that protect both the worker and the business by continuing to advocate for a living wage, paid family leave, and fair labor practices for all workers in Culver City.

Support for Minority-Owned Businesses: Create targeted programs to support minority-owned businesses and promote economic equity.

Forging a safer Culver City

Building a safer Culver City for all requires a forward-thinking approach to existing and new policy. Yasmine believes in providing our first responders with the necessary tools and funding needed to not only do their jobs, but remain safe. She will continue to fight for aggressive public safety policies that will shift certain responsibilities away from our sworn officers, providing them necessary relief, and into more care-first responders who will help assess and address situations, keeping all parties involved safe.

During her next term, Yasmine will prioritize:

Alternative and Care-First Response Programs: Working alongside CCPD and law enforcement professionals to continue to develop and implement alternative response programs for non-violent incidents, involving social workers and mental health professionals.

Community-First Collaboration: Strengthening community policing efforts to build trust and collaboration between law enforcement and Culver City residents.

Investing in Domestic Violence Support: Creating and strengthening services and support for survivors of domestic violence, including shelter and legal aid.

Creating Youth Programs
: Investing in youth programs and activities to provide positive outlets and reduce crime rates among young people.

MOVING Culver

Ensuring that Culver City is keeping pedestrians and those with alternative modes of transportation safe, reducing driver-related accidents, and reaching our state’s climate goals are all priorities of Yasmine’s. It’s why she championed the MOVE Culver City pilot project and other programs that will continue to provide the data needed to continue to create policies that keep Culver City at the forefront of public transit.

During her next term, Yasmine will prioritize:

Improved Public Transportation: Investing in expanded and improved public transit options to reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions.

Sustainable Transit Solutions: Promoting and increasing the use of electric buses and renewable energy sources for public transportation.

Accessible Transit: Ensuring that public transportation is accessible and affordable for all residents, including seniors and people with disabilities. Create a pilot program on-call circulators providing free access to local amenities for older adults.

Holding Leaders Accountable

Yasmine has and will continue to fight for common sense approaches to addressing how our city responds to it’s residents. She will continue to advocate for revenue-generating policies, staff efficiency improvements that will help streamline processes, and continuing to partner with our federal, state and local officials to pursue outside funding opportunities.

During her next term, Yasmine will prioritize:

Responsive City Services: Ensuring that all city departments have the resources they need to respond to residents and business requests and concerns.

Open Data: Making city data more accessible to the public through open data initiatives, enhancing transparency and accountability.

Public Participation: Increasing opportunities for public participation in city decision-making processes through town hall meetings, online forums, and participatory budgeting.

Regular Reporting: Ensuring that regular reporting on the progress of city projects and initiatives happen, with clear timelines and benchmarks.

Accountability: Strengthening ethics rules and establishing independent oversight bodies to monitor city activities.
